Smart Communications just added cell sites using 700 megahertz (MHz) in Davao City, adding to the eight total number of its 700 MHz powered sites to date.
Smart said that they plan to activate 360 cell sites with 700 MHz this year 2016, initially in Metro Manila, Cebu and Davao. The newest sites are located in Barangay Ma-a near DBP Village, along San Pedro Street near Osmena Park.
The first batch of are in Tanay, Rizal, Matina, Davao City, Bacoor, Cavite and Manggahan, Pasig city, where peak download speed of 100 Mbps was reache on a single-band, 700 MHz set up.
In three of the eight cell sites, Smart uses the Carrier Aggregation capability of LTE Advanced (LTE-A) and recorded a higher peak speeds, which is great for the users.
Peak speed means a maximum data rate can be achieved on a single-user basis. The actual speed can be experience on a normal situation, which can be influenced by a number of users being served by the cell sites.
“We are fulfilling our commitment to use the 700 MHz frequency to accelerate deployment of our LTE service,” according to Joachim Horn, PLDT and Smart chief technology and information advisor.
“This will help us deliver faster affordable Internet services throughout the Philippines.”
The low-ban 700 MHz needs to work longer range and provides better indoor covarate than the high band frequecies, Smart gained access to other additional frequencies when their parent company PLDT acquired 50% of the telcos business San Miguel Corporation (SMC).
Smart is already deploying LTE on 700 MHz to combine the powerful frequency with the most advance mobile phone technology. LTE is the fourth gen (4G) mobile technology that can provide fastest wireless data service commercially.
Smart is also working with local and foreign device manufacturers for more affordable LTE smartphones, pocket WiFi and tablets that can use the 700 MHz frequency.
“This combination of advanced network, technology and devices will enable us to provide the best digital experience to our customers across the country,” Horn noted.
Smart’s accelerated LTE deployment is part of PLDT’s three-year network expansion program.
This LTE deployment program is part of PLDT three year network expansion program, which has a budget of P43 Billion pesos, plus the additional US$100 million to utilize the additional SMC frequencies that are now available to Smart Communications.
