For most of the consumers out side China, we are limited to options when it comes to mobile phone unibody, metal or plastic, or something a bit of both. Xiaomi is now offering a ceramic unibody in their upcoming Xiaomi Mi MIX 2, with collaboration with Philippe Starck’s design studio to bring us another ceramic device with bezel-less display.
The MIX 2 comes with a premium design and flagship specs, it offers Qualcomm’s top of the line Snapdragon 835, with 6GB LPDDR4X RAM and up to 256GB of UFS 2.1 storage. A special edition of 8GB RAM but with only 128GB storage.
The MIX 2 supports 43 bands, making it a global smartphone, it has 3,400mAh battery and a Quick Charge 3.0 which support 9V/2A via USB-C. It also comes wit h18k PVD rose gold-coated camera rim, and the special edition gets the same rim feature on rear-facing fingerprint reader.
Though far from perfect, the Mi MIX (previous version) 6.4 inch display will be too big for most consumer, the camera weren’t that great and the invisible earpiece was not that loud for noisy streets.
The Mi MIX 2 is now 5.99 inch display with 2160 x 1080 resolution. The camera is Sony IMX386 sensor and 4-axis optical stabilization setup as one of the Xiaomi Mi 6, a slightly slower f/2.0 aperture. It can shoot 4K or 1080p video at 20fps and a 720p for 120fps for slow motion capture. Since this is an upgrade, there is now a small camera bump in the body. The front camera is now location at the bottom right of the display, it has 5MP using a different sensor from the rear.
The hidden earpiece has been replaced with a louder conventional earpiece, the only downside is the narrow slit along the top edge of the glass, which is a little bit noticable.
A serious issue from the previous MIX was that it was only avaiable in China due to limited smartphone supply. This time, Xiaomi is producing the MIX 2 outside China. They will offer two variants, a normal edition with metallic frame and a ceramic back, and a special edition with black or white ceramic unibody.
Xiaomi is looking to price the Mi MIX 2 at around 3,299 yuan or $510 for 64GB, 3,999 yuan or $610 for 256GB, where the special edition will be priced at 4,699 yuan or $720.
You can already pre-order the normal edition in China ahead of its September 15 launch date, but you will have to wait up to November for the special edition. Xiaomi already confirmed that the MIX 2 won’t be launched in the US, but you can still try your luck in other markets such as Hong Kong and Taiwan late this year.
